the offy she works in just can't compete with the papershop next door. they sell drink and tabs ang lottery tickets, what would anyone come in here for? with her silk scarf an her tracksuit, and sandals on her feet, she fills the shelves with biscuits and she's gracious in defeat. her boyfriend drives a silver mondeo with big speakers in the back. with his temper, he's a prime candidate for a stroke or a heat attack. and she nags him about his smoking and he rubbish that he eats, but he never listens to a word and she's gracious in defeat. the lighthouse keeper's daughter rows out on the dark and stormy waves, beneath which lies the ship and its crew, not a single soul left to be saved. she decides to keep on rowing, though the rain has turned to sleet. if you can't beat them, join them and be gracious in defeat. i fell in love with every barmaid that ever pulled me a pint. but what's that worth when you go home alone at the end of the night... and you write her a little love song with a melody simple and sweet. and that's your consolation.
