A tragic tale of moral awakening and redemption, but too late.
First time I've played this - I wrote it about three weeks ago, having been thinking about fly tippers, folk devils, moral panics and whatnot. Initially, I was thinking along the lines of Blondie's French Kissing In the USA (ie Fly Tipping in the UK) but then Bank Robber by The Clash suggested the opening lines. The day before the gig, I decided to add the instrumental intro and ending, a bit like the Scarface music - look at me, ma, I'm on top of the world, that sort of thing.
lyrics
Eddie was a fly-tipper, he never hurt anybody
he just liked to dump his load, and earn some easy money
His mam and dad ran a puppy farm, they said it was his to inherit
Instead he chose a tipper truck, and a life of independence
Local property developers, they flocked to use his skip hire
With its plausible deniability, and avoidance of unsightly bonfires
He spent his days in National Parks, in lay-bys, beauty spots and farmland
Blocking country roads wth crap, and desecrating ancient woodland
His kids were keen environmentalists, sorting cans and bottles and cardboard
He said he’d take it to be recycled, but slung it all in a graveyard
It was then the fateful day arrived – one of his so-called colleagues
Dumped a ton of asbestos waste in the middle of his kids’ school field
Eddie took to social media, though he didn’t want any trouble
But when he got home from graft that night, his driveway was full of rubble
Eddie had a heart attack, they buried him shortly afterwards
By the next morning, his grave was covered with binbags, toilet bowls and mattresses...
