about

the version I put on the original pearshaped album, based on Hank Williams' wonderful "I'm so lonesome I could cry" was withdrawn when copyright holders objected (though they did say they thought Hank would have liked it), and it's taken me this long to realise that slightly amended lyrics work just as well to the tune of Amazing Grace. Home recording on Audacity, so apologies for the quality, but I've always wanted this back on the album. The original featured Jon Lee on slide guitar, and the Soul Messengers (Anth Keenan and John Anderson) on dreamy b/vs.

lyrics

Above the sleeping council flats a helicopter flies - like me, it's searching in the dark, as another day goes by. The kids outside the off-licence are asking me to buy a pack of 20 Superkings, as another day goes by. The midnight Metro pulls away, I look into the sky and throw my ticket on the tracks, as another day goes by. At dawn, a silver vapour trail lights up the purple sky, and as I wonder where you are, another day goes by.
